WALKING - Page 1

GUIDED WALKING HOLIDAYS

WAYMARK HOLIDAYS has over 30 years’ experience of organising holidays for walkers and cross-country skiers. Since Waymark started ( 1973)  they have grown steadily and currently operate in 15 countries. They specialise in Europe, and with our collaboration ( Hibiscus Travel ) they are  introducing a NEW Walking programme in LESVOS  ( new destination ), incorporating walks in the Vatera, Agiasos, Plomari & Mihou areas for  Spring and Autumn 2006.

The holidays are designed for small groups with an experienced leader,  using good quality family-run hotels, to offer you a home away from home on the trips.

The 2006 walking brochure with the Lesvos programme is now available through their website, which will be updated with the Lesvos info soon too.

SELF GUIDED WALKING HOLIDAYS

Self guided walking holidays are ideal for people keen to walk independently, who like to stay in good quality accommodation, and prefer to have the organisation and research of their walks taken care of, without the chore of repacking and moving on each day.

We cater for those who feel that large groups detract from the quietness of the hills, and who prefer to explore on their own.  We offer all the advantages of variety, discovery and achievement, with none of the hassle of having to do your own planning.

Several trails are suitable for those with little previous experience of hill walking or map reading, and we are always on hand to help you decide on the most suitable walk.

Whatever your fitness and level of experience, you will find that we have plenty of choice of walks to suit you.

These self-guided walking holidays are designed to be completely flexible. You are therefore free to choose to come whenever it suits you, stay as long as you like and even enjoy days without walking. They are particularly suitable for couples, groups of friends and families, and prices are based on a minimum of two people in a party.

Discounts are available for parties of three or more bookings.

WALKING LOCATIONS

Lesvos is the third largest of all Greek Islands, located in the Aegean Sea and steeped in history, culture, tradition and natural beauty. It is often mistakenly known as Lesbos, due to the incorrect way of pronouncing the Greek â, as the English b, which in fact should be pronounced as the English v.  The locals and Greeks at large often refer to the island as Mytilini, after the capital, which was the official name of the island for some time in the Antiquity. When you are travelling to the island by air or ferry, departure boards will show timetables to Mytilini, with no reference to Lesvos at all.

May and early June are the perfect months to visit Lesvos and spend a quiet week or two, exploring the countryside through the same ancient footpaths and bridleways used for hundreds of years by the villagers and their patient donkeys.

In spring the air is wonderfully fresh and sweetened by the fragrances of tree blossoms and the woody scents of shrubs and herbs. Climbing into the hills, the vistas are breathtakingly beautiful with rugged hills and mountains providing a magnificent backdrop. It is a remarkably diverse habitat for wild flowers, orchids, insects and butterflies whilst Sparrow hawk, Buzzard, Kestrel, Peregrines and smaller birds of prey glide effortlessly above in the blue skies.

The autumn months of September and October are also very good for walking, since temperatures are quite good and you see the island from a different perspective.

The 2004 Edition of the Walking guide: Sunflower Landscapes-LESVOS is revealing the opportunities and variety for quality walking holidays in the island.

The walks we are suggesting (for single centre & two centre holidays) are covering the areas of Vatera, Agiasos, Plomari (South Lesvos) and Molivos, Petra (North Lesvos)
