Day tour 7

The Volcanic West

In this day tour we will discover the West of Lesvos. On this side of the island the landscape is different. Tangible memories of the volcano that shook the island millions of years ago are clear for all to see. The dense olive groves and the pine glad slopes of the eastern part of the island turn to volcanic rocks, giving at times the impression of a moonscape.

Following the main road leading from Kalloni to Andissa, we reach Vatousa on the slopes of mountain Ordymnos. Here we can visit the mansion of Dr Gogos a 19th Century building that houses the Cultural Centre of the village. For some months of the year we can visit the only commercial winery at Lesvos, located at Xidira, South of Vatousa. It produces a red organic semi dry wine called Methymnaeos. Just before Andissa, a picturesque village with the paved square and the old plane tree we can visit the Perivolis Monastery for women, with interesting 16th Century hagiographies. Further to the west we can visit the Ypsilou monastery, built on top of a hill, offering a panoramic view of the area.

At a small distance from the coastal village of Sigri at Bali Alonia, we will visit the petrified forest of Lesvos, a unique monument of Nature. The volcanic lava petrified the dense forest covering the western part of Lesvos, thus preserving the transformed material through the eons. The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest can be visited at Sigri, where we will also be able to see the Castle, the picturesque harbour, sandy beach and traditional tavernas where we will have a light lunch.

Travelling south we arrive at Eressos the birthplace of Sappho, the lyric poetess called the tenth muse. Findings from the excavations of the ancient town are exhibited at the small Archaeological Museum, while parts of the wall of ancient Eressos and Byzantine fortifications are preserved.

Two late-Christian basilicas with remarkable mosaics, Afendelis and Agios Andreas with remarkable mosaics are worth visiting. We will continue to Skala Eressos with its long sandy beach and deep blue sea, which is a popular summer destination. We will continue our journey coastally, enjoying the views of the Gulf of Kalloni, until we return to base.
