 TOWNS & VILLAGES Of LESVOS

VATERA

Vatera located at South Lesvos, 52 km away from Mytilini, processes 10 km of outstretched sandy beach, in a wide and peaceful bay with crystal-clear waters and a horizon of endless blue. It is a famous destination for sea-lovers and awarded with the Blue Flag. There are bars and tavernas strung along the road beyond the beach so refreshments are never too far. Free showers and changing booths, nets for beach volleyball and small children’s playgrounds are available all along the beach as well as small grocery stores.

Water sports are available at two different locations so you can water ski, windsurf, canoe, ride a banana, a donut or paddle more sedately in a pedalo. In the winter time the 200 residents that live here all year around, enjoy the mild sunny climate and the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, tending their gardens. Following the massive growth in new buildings and businesses that has taken place in the last 15 years, there has been a steady appreciation in the value of land and property. However there is still a limited availability of real estate for sale.

Vatera for many years has been promoted just as a summer resort that promises any guest an unforgettable stay and a summer bathed in sun, sand and sea. However it has many other advantages as a destination for alternative tourism (archaeology, walking, cycling, birdwatching, botany etc), which since 2000 are producing early spring and autumn tourism. There are lots of tavernas at Vatera and the harbour of Agios Focas ( also a vantage point for sea birdwatching ) which can tempt any palate with the available  tasty meals of the local cuisine .

The lush green mountains nearby are adorned with small churches and the remains of an old civilisation. A history spanning thousands of years unfolds before the traveller’s eyes, in the sight of marble ruins of ancient temples preserved in the foundations and walls of old country Christian churches. The ancient ruins of the Temple of Dionysus next to the chapel of Agios Focas are just one example. The Achilopigado and Paliopyrgos (small Castle) stand witness to history and different eras. The palaeontological fossils exhibited in The Natural History Museum of Vrisa ( which you must visit ) is a small portion of what the excavations in Vatera yielded in the lat 90’s.
