 TOWNS & VILLAGES Of LESVOS

THE VILLAGES OF GERA

The 6 villages of Gera: Papados, Scopelos, Mesagros, Plakados, Perama and Paleokipos are situated among the green hills and the olive groves, facing the life giving second and smaller Gulf of Lesvos, the Gulf of Gera.

The six villages have always been a united geographical entity / department and have been a municipality since the beginning of the century. Apart from its natural beauty, the area is of great historical and cultural importance. Due to their near proximity to Mytilini (20 kms), the villages are well connected to Mytilini by regular buses.

The Gulf of Yera has to be one of the most beautiful area in Greece and therefore in the entire world. Like the Gulf of Kaloni it is a large bay with a small mouth and a breeding ground for sardines and other fish and sea creatures. Also like Kaloni it is surrounded by olive groves and forests and some of the most fertile land on the island. There are large areas of wetlands and marshes, home for wild birds and animals and there are also hot-springs in the area of Therma, a 15 minute drive from the city of Mytilini.

The three beaches of Evriaki, Tarti and Perama are a great attraction and magnet for swimming and entertainment at their traditional tavernas during the summer months.

The climate of the area is very healthy with mild winters and fresh summers due to north winds prevalent in the area as well as the whole Aegean Sea. The local people make a living by cultivating the olive-trees, fishing and by providing tourism services in the largely undiscovered by foreign travellers area.

There are a number of small sea-food tavernas that serve the freshest local fish and are inexpensive. The towns in Yera are mostly agricultural and those on the coast of the bay were formerly industrial with tanneries and olive-oil factories. The ruins of these factories create an interesting background to the natural beauty of the sea and coast
