Thermal Springs
They are usually situated in secluded areas,
amongst peaceful surroundings and amazing scenery. So
they are good for the body as well as the soul since
they are a great relaxing and soothing experience.
EAST LESVOS
Loutopoleos Thermis
Located northwest of Mytilini, at Loutropolis Thermis.
It id evident that they have been used since ancient
times, due to the large number of Hellenistic marbles,
Roman inscriptions and Ottoman buildings found in the
immediate area. One of the discovered inscriptions
testifies that here was located the Temple of Artemis
of Thermi. In the two ancient domed pools, located
behind the present spa, one can discern the history of
the place through the ages.
In 1909, the construction of the “Sarlitsa Palace”
Hotel changed the area into a very modern health
resort, with international fame. It was one of the
most luxurious hotels of that era. It was patronised
by the rich and famous, before falling into decay over
the last thirty years
The current spa facilities have 10 bathtubs. The
spring is ferrous, brackish with an average
temperature of 46.9o C (0.6 units of radioactivity)
and is recommended for the treatment of rheumatism,
skin diseases and digestive trouble.
“Therma” at Geras Gulf
Located at the top of the Gulf of Gera and very
accessible from the main road artery that leads out of
Mytilini, at a distance of 6 km from the capital.
Archaeological findings prove that they also were used
since ancient times.
During the years of the Turkish occupation they were
renovated in the model of Turkish baths (hamam).
Resent renovations have developed the facilities for
the hot spring waters to flow into two public, domed
bathing-pools, one for men and the other for women.
The indoor pools are comfortable, while on the sides
there are suitable arched sections for steam baths and
inhalation therapy. They are changing rooms and
showers available.
The water is sub saline, carbonic and it contains
chlorine, with a temperature of 39.5o C (1.l8 units of
radioactivity). They are recommended for the treatment
of abdominal pains and dropsy.
There is a restaurant and refreshment bar on site, as
well as sport facilities for tennis, mini soccer etc.

are therefore prescribed by doctors. They are

Polichnitos Thermal Springs are listed as the
hottest mineral springs in Europe (60 - 90 degrees).
The baths are 60 meters above the sea, close to the
banks of the Almyropotamus river. The surrounding area
looks like a different planet, whereby rivers boil and
deposit residues of various colours and formations.

There are five mineral
springs but only three are used. In the winter time
you can see the springs from a distance due to the hot
vapours rising from them. The bath house with the
original pools as built during the Turkish Occupation
are retained and used (one for males, one for females).
Although the water at the springs is boiling and too
hot to touch, the temperature of the water in the
pools is kept quite comfortable.
The rest of the facilities have been upgraded and
improved for showering and changing. The baths are run
by Cosnia and is open daily but hours vary. Early in
the season its open in the mornings and by appointment
(tel: 0252 42678). As the season progresses it is open
mornings and afternoons. Currently charges for the use
of the facilities are 3 € per person, per session, but
these charges are under review.

Thermal Springs Lisvoriou, “Agios Ioannis”
Located near the village of Lisvori
(near Polychnitos) at a distance of 3 km. The hot
spring facilities are comprised of two separate
buildings, only one of which is maintained and 9 fully
furnished and equipped rooms. There is a public domed
semi circular bathing pool, built in the same
architectural style as the other thermal springs on
Lesvos, with separate areas for steam baths
The chemical composition is similar to
the Thermal Springs Polychnitou, although the
temperature is only 69o C. It’s worth noting that both
springs are the hottest in Europe.
NORTH LESVOS
Thermal Springs Eftalou

at the northwestern tip of Lesvos, at a distance of 4
km away from Mythimna (Molyvos). The thermal spring is
situated on the coast and the water composition is
