Paul's Birdwatching - Nifida Headland
Nifida can best be reached by heading north from Vatera to
Polichnitos, on to Skala Polichnitou and then along the beautiful coastal
track to Nifida with its excellent unspoilt beach which Sarah found to be
extremely relaxing. Whilst she was sunbathing I walked along the beach
road to its end and up onto the rocky headland. From the road I saw a
Little Owl perched on a water tank close to the last house of the village.
Further on were Northern Wheatear, Black-eared Wheatear and Whinchat. From
the road I also spotted a couple of the more sort after Bunting species; a
male Cretzschmars singing from telegraph wires and surprisingly a female
Cinereous Bunting carrying what appeared to be nesting material. Although
I was not expecting to see Cinereous Bunting in this locale it is only a
few hundred meters across Kalloni Bay to the North Western stronghold of
this species and perhaps the population is expanding further south. the
Bogati headland close to Nifida does apparently hold several pairs of this
species.
On the headland itself I found White Wagtail, a
flock of mixed races of Yellow Wagtail including some stunning male
Black-headed and amongst them a couple of Red-throated Pipits.
On
returning to the beach I caught up with Lesser Grey Shrike, Olivaceous
Warbler and many Spanish Sparrows.
The Bogati Headland appears to worth exploring and can be
accessed from Nifida village. It will be interesting to see how far
species from the north of Kalloni bay have spread to the southern side.
