Mytilene Around & About

We travel south on the east coastal artery to Mytilene. Most foreign visitors, having driven through the unfamiliar and busy streets from the airport to Mytilene and out again, are little inclined to return to Mytilene. This journey through hardly shows off the best aspects of the main city on the island but Mytilene is always worth a visit.

In Mytilene there are several places to visit: Two Archaeological Museums, the Castle, the Ancient Theatre, the Yeni Tzami, The Cathedral of Agioi Theodori, the Church of Agios Therapon (built 1860) and the pedestrianised shopping street Ermou where you can shop for anything you might want. A place worth visiting in the promenade is LESVOSHOP where a wide variety of Lesvos and Limnos products can be bought.

Heading again out of Mytilene to the village of Varea, visiting the Theofilos Museum and the Teriade Museum is a very enlightened experience. Not far from there you can visit the Church of Taxiarhes at Kagiani.  We will continue to Koundouridia where we can have lunch at the harbour taverna. Leaving Koundouridia  we will follow the coastline of the Gulf of Gera until we reach the top of the Gulf , where we can visit the Thermal Springs at Therma for a telexing and therapeutic dip in the healing waters.

On our return to Vatera we will go through the village of Kerameia, where visiting the bakery  is always a rewarding experience. At a short distance from Kerameia, after the turning to Ippios we will visit the restored old watermill “Mylelia”, in full working order, where durum wheat is still being ground. More than 50 different air-dried organic pastas can be bought on the shop on site and other organic products. There is also an old donkey –powered olive press to see, and a small church of Agios Panteleimon. A very old tree church is near there too.

Back on the main road we continue until we reach Karini, with the shaded riverside and taverna. The naïve painter Theofilos spend some time there living in the large hollow plane tree, over to the left of the buildings. From there  we drive straight on to Vatera, through the picturesque valley of Agios Dimitrios.
