Of LESVOS
MITHIMNA (MOLYVOS)
Mithimna or Molyvos located
62 kilometres from the island' s
capital,
is one of the five ancient towns in Lesvos and a
well-known tourist resort. It is famous for the
well-preserved traditional features, the picturesque stone
houses with the tiled roofs, the mansions, the old
churches, the architectural monuments and the cobblestone
lanes just right for strolling.
This charming combination of history and natural beauty
has b een
the inspiration for many poets, writers and artists since
time immemorial. Visitors to the town are enchanted by the
picturesque scenery of the olive groves at the foot of the
rock the top of which the medieval castle dominates. At
dusk when it lights up, it is bewitching.
The main cemetery of the ancient town was situated to the
south of the town wall. The graves, which have been found
along the road that starts from Petra and goes to Mithimna,
are a pr oof
that this road already existed in the antiquity.
On the far side of the town, the small harbour completes
this unique image. The ruins of the ancient quay show that
the ancient harbour was situated at the same place, where
the current one is. The small harbour with the traditional
tavernas is a very inviting spot for a traveller to sample
the local dishes and enjoy the ambience.
Places to visit are the Public Library, Museum, the Art
Gallery, the beach and Natural Thermal Springs at Eftalou,
4km from Mithimna.
