Its location makes it very visible to the right of the port. It was built in Byzantine times during the 9th Century. It has been restored and fortified by the Genoese and the Ottomans.

Ioustiniani Palace at Chios Town This historical building dated between the 14th and 15th Century A.D. is situated between the central gate of the Castle of Chios and the main square of the town. It was perhaps the headquarters of the Genoese Podesta. Disfigured by Turkish alterations and additions, it was restored during the years 1980 – 1986 by the Archaeological Authority.

The building maintains a fortress –like appearance over two storeys, each containing one room. At the northern side of the Palace, there is an external stairway, which leads to the walls and the southeast tower of the Castle.

In the actual exhibition, Byzantine murals, post-Byzantine icons, Byzantine and Genoese sculptures and small-scale works of art are on display.

Anavatou Fortresses: Anavatos is a deserted settlement, amphitheatrically situated on harsh ground over the edge of a cleft. It flourished during the last centuries of the Turkish occupation, but was seriously affected in 1822 during the slaughter of Chios and in 1881 by the devastating earthquake. The natural fortification and the location of the area reveal that it was originally build for defensive purposes, during the years of piracy. At the site today one can see the remains of several deserted fortresses, remnants from past times.
