Festivals

The festivals in the villages are part of the traditional life of the island. The carnival in Thimiana is celebrated in a special way and is known as Mostra of Thymiana, an old custom since the medieval times. The last Friday of Triodio the young men of the village masquerade.

They wear old men’s and woman's clothes and hide their faces with masks. Then, on Sunday they gather all together in the centre of the village and accompanied with music, they dance the famous "Talimi".

This dance is particularly fascinating and enacts with dancing movements the fights, face to face, between the locals and the pirates. After that they head for the church of Agios Eustratios, singing a war-song, and there they tie on the church's railing the Chian standards and flags. In our days this old tradition has been enriched with new elements, satirical floats and opportune dresses

The carnival is also celebrated in Mesta, Pyrgi, Lithi, Olympi, Lagada and elsewhere, where “Agas” is enacted. Agas is a very strict judge, who is being assigned by the residents of the village to judge and condemn most of the people that are present. More over, they are obligated to buy off their sentence. The whole event is humorous and recreational, in which the young people are dressed in very beautiful local costumes and take part in the show. The first time this event is known to have happened was around 1830 to 1840.

The Cultural Club of Volissos in the homonymous village revives the custom “Diplo”, every year. The last Sunday of the Carnival people gather on the village's square, singing the verses and dancing in the beat of the Volissian dance "Diplo". Then a great celebration follows on the square, drinking souma (a drink made from figs) and eating roasted chickpeas and sweets.

The Rocket War of Vrondados is an old custom that began at the time of the Turkish occupation and it still happens every year at Easter. In the beginning the residents of the parishes of Panagia Erithiani and Saint Mark's, which are facing each other, made small cannons, to fire at each other. But through time the canons became rockets and fireworks made from nitre, sulphur and gunpowder.

The preparation of the rockets starts immediately after each Easter, so everything can be ready for the next year. Each year the amount of the rockets increases and the fireworks burning in the air, at the night of the Christ's resurrection, are really magnificent. Many people visit Chios Island this time of the year, so they can enjoy this truly unique but dangerous event. For this reason, the last few years measures are taken for the protection of all the people that participate in this event and the surrounding houses, so the custom can be continued safely.

The Monastery of Agia Markela attracts many people on July the 22nd each year, for the festivities that take place there in remembrance of the Saint and her miracles.

On the 15th of August, don’t miss the festival at Pyrghi, where you will enjoy the traditional music and learn to dance the local dance called “Pyrghoussiko”
