Both in
Chios town and the villages, you can eat well since t
he
island is famed for
good, flavoursome traditional food. “ Boureklikia” is the magic word
that will travel you in the “world of Taste”. If you want to drink
something different ask for “souma”, which is made of figs. It is a
very potent drink, the equivalent to “raki”. This is not to be
confused with the famous “soumada” which is made of almonds and makes
a delicious hot beverage with a sprinkling of cinnamon.
The
island’s tavernas and restaurants serve fresh fish and seafood, cooke
d
in traditional ways. The Ouzo cafes of Chios, like “Iakovos’s Ouzeri”
at the fish-pier and the tavernas “Morias” and “ Messeonas” at
Mesta, offer local ouzo with tasty mezedes like “hortokeftedes” and
local pies.
A walk to
Pirgi should be combined with lunch at the village’s only taverna
which is famous for its delicious stifado = onion stew or you coul
d
sample fresh shrimp or fish and follow with a dessert of yogurt and honey at
the “Taverna of Kyra-Despina”.
Zikos
Taverna
in Volissos will give you a warm welcome and good food. For those who don’t
like seafood should go to “Perivoli” at Kambos with the pretty garden
and the delicious cuisine or “Byzantio” or “Freskada” or “Mouragio”
at Chios.
The town
of Chios is full of bars, clubs and discos attracting many people, such as
“Karnagio”, “Kavos”, “ Mythos” for Greek Music, the
disco “ Ariadni”, the the Café Bars “ Muses”, “Elinikon”,
“Phaedra” and “En plo” for loud music, also “Remezzo”.
Outside
Chios, if you like loud music and dancing until down the “Sunrise”
Bar is the place for you.
The
cosmopolitan beach of Karfas attracts many people who prefer the quiet bar
“Stasi” or the crowded “Graffiti”, while in Vrondados the
cosmopolitan club
“
Venetiko”
is a huge attraction.
