The island is 174 n.m. from Piraeus, 153 n.m. from Rafina and 221 n.m. from Kavala.
Ferryboats connect the island with Piraeus (11 hrs), Rafina (10 hrs) and Kavala (20 hrs).
These connections and local hydrofoils also link Samos to several other islands, of which Chios, Lesvos, Patmos and Ikaria are the closest. Timetables of ferry and hydrofoil connections change in winter and summer.
From the Airport of Samos there are flights to and from Athens (1 hr). In the summer, there are flights to and from other islands that have airports. Such islands are Lesvos (Mytilini Airport) and Rhodes.
The position of Samos, near the coast of Turkey, permits a day trip to the Turkish tourist village of Kousadasi (Connection by local boats -2 hrs and local hydrofoils -35min), which lies opposite the island. From this village, it is possible to reach Ephesus (17 km), one of the most important archaeological sites of the ancient Greek civilization.
