Products
Limnos was never a poor island. Although in the past during its known history the Limnians experienced difficult times, the island survived them and adapted to meet the presenting challenges.
During the Byzantine period Linmos was the Granary of Constantinople (Istanbul). Unfortunately during the last years the production of wheat has diminished. However to this day the Limnians produce a type of traditional pasta called flomaria, from the local wheat.
Very high quality cotton was also produced here until the 1960’s. It was in great demand and considered to be nearly as good as Egyptian cotton.
Amongst the most distinct local products, renowned all over Greece is the wine, of the Muscat Alexandria’s variety. Most of the vineyards are in the region of Agios Dimitrios.

At Kaminia, not far from the ancient site of Poliochni a special variety of anise is grown, the essential ingredient for the distilation of the Limnian ouzo.
At the ancient village of Skandali (SE Limnos), built at 1321, the best honey of Limnos is produced.
The sheep’s cheese of Limnos is also one of the best produced in Greece. You can buy it in two varieties Kalathaki, called this because is set in small baskets weaved from reeds and Liasto, which is dried under the sun.
At the village of Atsiki, the very successful Women’s Co-operative continues the tradition of producing local products, which they are very much sought after by visitors.
