At the village of Katalakkos (NW Limnos) (named so because it’s built in a pit surrounded by hills), the Church of St Modestos was found in 1856. St Modestos is the patron Saint of the stock – breeders and cattle. On the 18th of December – the saint’s honour day the stock-breeders (kehagiades in the local dialect) used to come to the church in great numbers, to pray and celebrate. They would be characteristically dressed in their best: white breaches, shirts and caps and leather homemade shoes, called tservoulia. They would play the regional music and dance their own dances: kehagiadiko and patma.
At the Church of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary at Mudros (the island’s old capital) there is a big festival on the 25th of March, which attracts pilgrims from all over the island.
The Church of St. George was built in 1869 at Kondopouli, one of the largest villages in Limnos. On the Saints honour day (23rd of April) horse races are being conducted. The riders compete on bareback horses. The winner after he races around the church three times, accepts the prize from the priest at the entrance to the church and then goes in the church on horseback to light a candle in honour of the saint. The prize used to be a lamb with a red scarf around its neck, these days is a medal on a red ribbon.
Just outside the very old village of Romanou is the church of St.Constantine & St Helene. Worshippers from all over the island still honour the Saints here on the festival on the 21st of May.

On the 7th of September one of the island’s biggest festivals takes place at the Monastery of St. Sozon with traditional dancing and song.
