Thermal Springs

The ancient Greeks were amongst the first to discover the therapeutic properties of the hot mineral spring from as early as the 13th century B.C. Indeed the ancient Greek doctors (Hippocrates) physicists; historians (Herodotus) and geographers were the first to involve themselves with thermal springs and spas.

Ikaria is richly endowed by nature with the invaluable wealth of thermal springs. They are considered among the most radioactive in the world. They are classified as super-hot, radioactive, saline springs, differing from one another in degree of radioactivity and heat. The temperatures range from 33.50 – 58.70 degrees and the radioactivity levels from 9 – 754 Macheunits.

Ikaria has eight hot springs, which flow at various points on the island's shores. Of these:

  • The Thermo and Chlio-Thermo are located in the area of Lefkada, 2,500 m and 1.800 m respectively, to the west of Agios Kirikos.

  • The Mustapha-Litza spring is to the East of the "Eparcheion", within the town of Agios Kirikos.

  • Five springs (Spilaiou, Pamphili, Kratsa, Artemidos and Apollonos) are in the Therma region.

  • The Agias Kyriakis spring is located in the northeastern coast of the island.

  • A further spring, called the "Athanato Nero" wells in the Xylosyrti region, 10 meters from the seashore. The diuretic water of this spring is conducive to passing stones and sand from the kidneys and the bladder.

Ôhe waters of the hot mineral springs on Ikaria are considered suitable for the healing of the Following ailments: Chronic rheumatism, specifically where several types of arthritis are involved, neuralgias, muscular pains, gynaecological ailments, endocrine gland irregularities, circulatory problems, breathing problems and dermatological ailments.

No danger due to radioactivity exists from bathing in the hot mineral springs, because their radioactivity is derived exclusively from radium salts and radon, which is dispelled.
