Day tour 3

Mountain Village Spectacular

We travel on the inland public artery towards the centre of the island until we reach the beautiful DAY TOUR mountain village of Agiasos, built amphitheatrically on the green slopes of Mt. Olympus. Agiasos is one of the oldest and highest villages on the island. It remains an old world of narrow jumbled streets; red roofed houses packed one on another and almost indistinguishable from each other. Wandering the narrow streets provides cameo after cameo of village life.

The heart of Agiasos is the Church of Panagia Vrefocratousa (the Virgin Mary, holding the Holy Infant), with the miraculous icon painted by Apostle Luke, which attracts hundreds of visitors, all year around. We will visit the shops that display and sell the locally produced ceramics, textiles, fretwork, woodcarvings, sugar preserved fruits, honey and many other products. Paying a visit to the village bakery is something unavoidable, since the delicious aromas assail your nose as you walk by.

Other places to visit are : the Byzantine-Ecclesiastical Museum, the Folklore Exhibition, the Cultural Centre “Anagnostirion” and The Garden of Madonna.

We will have lunch, at the Taverna Douladeli with the delicious home cooked traditional specialities for which the owner Kiria Vaggelio, is renowned for.  The inside of the taverna is tastefully decorated with artefacts of bygone village life and a Wurlitzer jukebox, which once upon a time, was a modern form of entertainment for the villagers. The shady terrace at the front of the taverna is an ideal location to enjoy the delicious lunch and watch the world go by.

After lunch we travel to Plomari via Megalochori. Plomari is a jumble of houses and narrow streets set against a steep hillside by the blue waters of the Aegean. It is a busy fishing port and perhaps most famous for as the Metropolis of ouzo and it has to be explored on foot. A quick diversion eastwards leads to the lovely beach resort of Agios Isidoros, where we can make time for a swim.

On the way there we can stop at the island’s most famous ouzo distillers, Barbayanni. You can enjoy a brief factory tour, a tour of the unique Ouzo Museum, taste the range of ouzos made on the premises and buy bottles of ouzo to take home. There are several other museums to visit depending on time and interest: The Soap Factory Museum, the Industry and Navy Museum, the Folk Art Museum and Library and the Ecclesiastical Museum.

We will return to Vatera coastally heading west, admiring the open views of the Aegean and if we are lucky before heading inland , the golden sunset colouring the horizon beyond Agios Focas.
