Day tour 2
North Coast Seascapes
We leave Vatera behind and head for Achaderi and the sunken
ancient town of Pyrra.
We follow the coastline of the Gulf of Kalloni and skirting around the famous Wetland with the flamingos, we reach
Kalloni, an up and coming provincial town. Not very far north of Kalloni we
will visit the Monastery Limonos with its priceless archives of books
and manuscripts, reflecting the historical, cultural and spiritual course of
the region, through the years.
We continue to
Petra, a seaside
town built in the middle of a green plain. But just before getting there it’s
worth taking a short diversion to the small village of
Petri, where we can
have lunch at the Petri Taverna. The taverna seems to be suspended in mid air
with its colourfully planted terrace and the wonderful home cooking. It is also
a prime location from where we can admire the view over the village to the open
sea, decorated by the sandy beach, the rich vegetation, the gardens of the
villagers and the chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the "Glykofilousa"
= of the sweet kisses, in the distance. Once into Petra we can visit
the chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the "Glykofilousa",
which is situated on the top of a high rock in the middle of the village. The
Mansion of Vareltzidena (built in
1740) is also worth visiting.
If there is a
major resort on Lesvos it has to be Molyvos (or Mithymna), one of
the most ancient towns on the island, where we will go to next. It is
picturesque and the most well preserved medieval settlement in the Mediterranean. Hardly
surprising from the ancient times, it attracted early settlers as the fortified
hill and port show. We will visit the medieval castle, which still stands in an
imposing position on the top of the hill. Molyvos because of its beauty, it has
been, a place of inspiration for many poets, writers and artists. The old stone
houses,
situated in a labyrinth of narrow paved streets, the stone Ottoman
fountains and mansions make Molyvos unforgettable. On the far side of the town,
there is a picturesque small port that completes this unique image. Depending on
time & interest we will also visit the Archaeological Collection and
the Public Gallery.
We continue to Eftalou,
with the picturesque beach for swimming and relaxation and the thermal springs,
right on the beach. You may choose to take a relaxing 10 min bath in the
healing waters. After that we continue to the picturesque fishing village of
Skala Sykamias, for cooling
refreshments at the harbour and to admire the little white church of
Panagia Gorgona, (Virgin Mary
the Mermaid) at the edge of the sea.
We return to Vatera
via the picturesque village of
Agia Paraskevi,
with the remarkable
traditional architecture - urban and
rural.
