Day tour 1
North East Coast Spectacular
We head towards Mytilini
not quite getting into town but using the Moria
Bypass to reach the picturesque village of Thermi, at the hill of Karyes.
We will visit the word famous Monastery of St.Rafael,
Nicolas and Irene (which in fact is a Nunnery), which is visited by many
thousands of pilgrims every year.
After that we will continue north on the east
coastal artery, past spectacular scenery, the old chapel of Agios
Stefanos and the ancient potteries, to reach the
village of Mandamados. We will visit
the village shops famous for dairy products and ceramics and the Monastery
of Taxiarches, Archangel Michael the patron saint
of the island. The monastery apart from being a spiritually uplifting place, it is also a very restful place to
take five.
The next port of call after Mandamados,
is Skala Sykamias
via the village of Sykamia, a place full of pure
atmosphere. Skala Sykamias
is a charming fishing port and a favoured lunch spot for the locals and visitors.
Part of the landscape is the little white church of Panagia
Gorgona, (Virgin Mary the Mermaid) at the edge of
the sea. You can enjoy the ambience by firing a few shots on the camera, having
a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean and stopping to have a late
lunch at one of the tavernas in the little harbour.
On our way back
to Vatera, we will go through the picturesque village
of Agia Paraskevi
and if we have time and energy we will make a diversion to the Ancient
Temple at Messa,
dating back to the 3rd century A. C. It was dedicated to the
worship of the Aeolian Trinity (Zeus, Hera,
Dionysus). It was founded by the Aeolians it, as their federal Temple when they
were first established on the island of Lesvos. When Christianity was
established, a Basilica was founded at the east part of the Ancient Temple.
During the Byzantine Era the chapel dedicated to Taxiarhes
succeeded the Basilica. It is thought that the graves found at the site belong
to the inhabitants of a small medieval village situated app. 300 metres to the
west of the Ancient Temple. Returning to the main road we will drive by the
ruins of the ancient town of Pyrra, before we return to Vatera.
