CONSERVATION PROJECT

Up to now the Wetlands at Skala Kallonis are defined as the one Important Bird Area on Lesvos, by the Hellenic Ornithological Society, who is very slow to recognise the importance of other Wetlands in Lesvos in terms of biodiversity and

Environmental protection.

However the noticeable environmental changes that have taken place at the Wetlands at Skala Kallonis in resent years have acted as a warning bell on many who genuinely care for the environment of the whole island. This led to the launch of a truly naturalist Project in April 2004.

The ALYKOUDI POOL LESVOS NATURE RESERVE (APLNaR).

For those that are not familiar with Alykoudi Pool, at Skamnioudi in the Municipality of Polichnitos, we can’t say that we are surprised, since it has been marked in the wrong place in the maps of the only BIRDING IN LESVOS book and also it is not recorded in the Road Editions Lesvos map.

Many birdwatchers who heard about it have been trying to find it, but they have been mostly getting lost. We are taking steps to correct the later in a revised edition of the map, which is estimated to be available in late 2005 at the earliest. As for the former…….there is nothing much we can do about that error.

BUT ALYKOUDI POOL IS THERE AND WORTH CHECKING OUT,

The objectives of APLNaR are:

·         to educate the public about the importance of the local area as a birdwatching destination

·         the protection of the environment in general

·         the protection of the immediate area of the Wetland from indiscriminate and damaging vehicle access

·         the installation of observation hides in the periphery of the Wetland
